Princess Pearl, also known as My Fair Princess, Return of the Pearl Princess, or Princess Returning Pearl (還珠格格, pinyin: Huánzhū Gégé, often abbreviated as "HZGG"[note 1]) is a Chinese-language television costume drama set in 18th-century Qing Dynasty. Season 3 is also called Heavenly Earth (天上人間, pinyin: Tiānshàng Rénjiān).

Written by creator Chiung Yao, the Cinderella-like story revolves around tomboyish and cheerful Xiaoyanzi, originally an orphaned and semiliterate vagrant in Beijing who, after befriending Qianlong Emperor's illegitimate daughter Xia Ziwei, becomes a princess by accident. Although some characters, the plot premise, and certain sections of the story are based on historical events and figures, considerable artistic license was employed.

The first two seasons (1998–1999) were jointly produced by Chiung Yao's company in Taiwan (in conjunction with China Television) and Hunan Broadcasting System (HBS) in Mainland China. They received up to 54% and 65% of audience shares respectively in some Chinese regions. Season 3 (2003) was co-produced with a Hong Kong company and suffered backlash in popularity, having replaced most of the original cast.[1][2][3]

Season 1 won Best Television Series and Best Actress (Zhao Wei) at the 17th Golden Eagle Awards and went on to become a massive hit in many other East Asian and Southeast Asian countries. With reruns in the 2010s still consistently finishing at the top of ratings in China,[4][5][6] the drama is considered the most commercially successful Chinese-language series in history.[7] HBS permanently became China's second largest network,[8] while previously little-known cast members became household names and huge teen idols over night. More than 15 years after Season 1, the actress trio of Zhao, Ruby Lin and Fan Bingbing still count among the biggest names in Chinese-language entertainment.[9]

In 2011, HBS produced a remake with a rewritten screenplay from Chiung Yao. Lin made a cameo appearance.

‘Princess Pearl’ is sensational...the love stories in it are naive

The first one was really very popular at that time. I can still remember every time after school, hurried back home and turned on TV.
I would watch it without any interrupiton. Every one loves Xiao Yanzi and since then Zhao Wei and Fan Bingbing become famous celebrities in Mainland China, even unitl now. I think no other TV shows can match with it until today.
