Hi guys,

can anybody recommend good ways to break the ice with new Chinese friends? What do they usually do in their spare time? Do they like to go ta malls, parks, clubs, or what? I'm asking for people aged 20-30 years old, middle class who are white collar workers.

Actually it depends on what kind of person is your friend. Generally the Chinese people like to get together at restorants or clubs, or invite you to play basketball or some other sports. If you are already closed enough to each other, he/she may invite you to play Ma Jiang or poker together, sometimes they gamble a little money but sometimes they gamble quite big, which is not recommended.

I think what attracts Indonesian will also attract the Chinese, such as foods, games, parties. You will find the Chinese people are very similar with Indonesian in a lot of aspect. ;)

Agree with Laoshi. It depends what kind of person your Chinese friend is. However there are some small tips for you to make friends with Chinese.
No.1 Normally Chinese people are not initiative to make friends with foreigners. Don't hesitate if you want to invite him/her to join some of your activities if you want to be friends with them.
No.2 Talking about some popular topics such as culture difference, hobbies, foods, movies, etc. You will find some common interests between you. For men, maybe talk about football, baskertball, while for girls, such as clothes, makeups, shopping, foods, etc.
No.3 If you are also a shy person, keep your beautiful smile on your face. :D

Wish you good luck
